If they are vertical they will have a worm shaft and the axle gear will be a wormed gear.

The motors on the Vanderbilt and Hiawatha are vertical but they must be using bevel gears, not worm gears, because you can push the engine along and the wheels will turn. A worm drive will not allow you to turn the wheels.
