Why don't you just remove the necessary buttons and control from the controller and mount them in your mock-up; then simply extend the wires and connections. If you want you could replace the supplied buttons with your own and the variable control (potentiometer) used for speed could be replaced by a series of resistors and connected to a selector switch to create a stepped control.
