Theory also says if you put a choke like the ones gunrunnerjohn suggests in series with the power supply than passive mode should become almost identical to active mode because you're raising the impedance at the DCS frequency range (but not at 60Hz). The imaginary part of impedance ZL presented by a choke or inductor with inductance L goes up with frequency f.   j is what circuit designers call i.... sqrt(-1)

That would be a good experiment to try.  I'd love to be able to unconditionally recommend passive mode if you didn't lose signal.   Then the big difference is the emergency shutdown, and there are other ways to accomplish that.
