If you like to scenic, the seams will stand out unless you put on several layers of ground foam, preprinted roadway or some structures. Although I use all three on my layouts, not everything gets covered. I prefer the exposed areas to be smooth, so I fill and sand smooth with joint compound (spackle). To fill larger gaps I start with painters caulk then smooth with joint compound.
