Look closely at the art on the ends of each car.  You'll notice that the closed ends (non exposed ends) have vertical striping on them.  This is to simulate the gaskets of the companion ways.  The end with the vertical striping of your "double ended loco" fits into the open end of one of the cars, which fits into the open end of the next car, which fits into the open end of the lead loco.  Thus, you have a 4 car articulated train.
