Most of the time the "ground plane" wire is not necessary. Its best to lay your track and test it first, you may not have an issue.
I do not have a lot of problems with losing an engine on my tracks but it does happen occasionally. The engine will just stop, usually if I re-address the engine it will fire up again and run. This does happen not with all engines, some seem to have more problems than others.
