Reply to "Simulated 3rd rail spark/electrical arc"

My understanding is that 3rd rail arcing is location based. The arcing gradually destroys both the shoe and the rail, and so is something to be avoided as much as possible. But at the points where the third rail stops and the shoe leaves the rail, there seems to be no way to prevent it.
