All my steamers do it, and none are MTH. It's worse when running a long while at the higher speeds and when full or too full of fluid.
My diesels do it too but slightly less - probably because the stacks are more constricted.
To my knowledge this is a learn to live with it. I used to worry about it, but no longer. And I don't recall it ever causing harm to any paint jobs.
I just use any sort of cotton waste or soft rags for it. My favorite clean-up for this are the cotton material or puff-balls that come in medicine bottles. I don't like throwing away that which could have some use, and this is about the only use I ever found for those...
