The brown won't hurt anything, they get worse than that before I worry about it. Just make sure the thermistor and resistor are both firmly in contact with the wick and that spacing should be about right.

Update John: apologies for the late response.

Ran locomotive at our last meet recently in conventional mode. A new symptom showed up- Flipped smoke unit switch to off as we were inside and didn't want to smoke out the guests, but for some reason it still produced smoke. Luckily for me had fluid on hand so it wouldn't burn out. Other than that, it was working better than before.
