Well, I'd reset the locomotive and see if it still smokes. I'm bothered by the "better than before", that usually means you're getting more smoke than you should because the smoke unit is getting too much power! 
The RCMC assumes it's smoke switch can turn off the smoke output, but it's an electronic link and not the physical interruption of power to the smoke unit that was used with TMCC or early Legacy.
