smoking caboose err upgrade

I am upgrading a 19807 smoking caboose to command control using a err mini commander for accessories. The smoke unit (10-2722-50) has a 1 ohm 10 watt resistor connected in series with it. I can only assume lionel added the resistor to limit voltage to the smoke unit. Can I remove the resistor and connect the smoke unit directly to one of the high current outputs on the mini commander? And if so, what would be the recommended voltage? I cannot find what the specs are for this smoke unit.
