Great suggestion, the only shorty steam set I can recall is the Lindbergh Special with the Atlantic and two 18" cars. For diesels MTH did the City of Miami as an E-6 and five 18" cars which is almost 9 feet long and Lionel did the 1948 Freedom Train ALCO PA and seven 18" cars which is about 12 feet long. These new scale sets with ten or twelve 21" cars have to be nearing 17 to 24 feet in length with motive power are just too long (and expensive) for us to even consider. The coming MTH CGW F unit and a few passenger cars would represent one of their short passenger trains.
