For a 4A peak decoder, and perhaps 1 foot maximum wire runs, 20 AWG wire really isn't needed. A 1 foot long piece of 26 AWG wire only drops 0.16V at 4A, and that voltage drop is negligible. If the install is easier with finer wire, go for it.
