I have not seen any photographic evidence that Southern painted any PS-4 or other passenger steam locomotive back into the black freight scheme during the early 1950s. It appears all stayed green until they were retired and scrapped. Southern was completely dieselized by 1953, so there was not much need to place any passenger steam into freight service, especially since the FTs arrived as early as 1943.
I'm glad the issue of "black" Ps4 engines came up again with a possibly definitive answer.
