Can speed control be added to a LionChief steam locomotive?

Is there a way cruise or speed control can be added to a LionChief steam engine? Can either an ERR module or the electronics from LionChief be swapped with LionChief Plus electronics which has speed control? There's no option of purchasing a LC+ version of the engine I want to covert since it's the Lionel Hallmark Toymaker Santa Express, a rtr starter set engine that's not available in LC+. I also don't want to gut all the electronics since I want to keep the original voice announcements of the Toymaker Santa Express. Also don't envision replacing the puffer style smoke unit with a fan driven one since as seen in the HTSE video link below, the smoke rings produced by the loco using Mega Steam add the perfect whimsy to this fantasy engine.
