I've been looking at the thread spools like you mentioned, but can't find any that look to be a big enough diameter, though I could be overestimating their size based on pictures. The thought was to use a wooden dowel and cut the taper off a spool, then connect those and stain them. I don't have the woodworking tools to make my own, unfortunately.
