The vertical risers are about 1" in diameter. Attached is a photo of another original D-148 that shows the risers in profile. Note that the entire upper level, risers, track bed and guard rails are painted in the same tan that is used for the base roads and track beds. In the other D-148, the upper level was restored and was not yet painted.

If you allow yourself to stray from a true reproduction, TWTrainWorx and BridgeBoss have nice elevated sections and railings. I think they would look appropriate on this layout with the self-made pylons.
