In that price range, in addition to what has been mentioned, there is the ubiquitous Lionel 4-4-2 that has been made by the thousands since the late 80’s and put in starter sets. It’s a very reliable runner . Also MTH put out a variety of 0-4-0’s, 2-6-0’s, 4-6-0’s and 2-8-0’s in Railking starter sets with conventional control and whistle or with sound that I have been able to pick up used versions for $100 or a little more . Very reliable , sturdy and good runners
