I had the opportunity to run an Alco S1 for a little while at a tourist line. It always sounds a little broken, even when its not!
600 hp from an inline 6, with cylinder bores you could drop a pumpkin inππ! Cab heaters that only worked after the engine warmed up - which was not fast! The smoke on a cold start looked like a brush fire. Once warmed up though, a reliable machine that did what it was asked. The air slide throttle was always a unique experience. There's only one click, and you have to listen for it, after that you have an variable throttle like a gas pedal, not an 8 position set up like the GP machines.
The view out the back was great. What I did not like was that the fuel tank was directly under the cab.
I have good memories of running it, maybe I need a model just to remember the sound!
