Lew- ever considered adding a switch by the diesel? A couple of short sidings would fit inside that reverse loop quite nicely.

Bob, I've thought about that but that's just it: very short sidings. To get reliable coupling coming out of an O36 curve you need a half-section separating the remote uncoupler from the track switch. To get the variation& variety of consists I want would require siding space for 20 cars or so plus a drill track. Hence the O-5-O. I have been considering using half the floor space in the train room for an Interchange yard.
