That's what I did with mine - made it into 5344's Mercury incarnation. I even used the Wms brass tender - trucks and all - plus swapped Lionel RS/IR drawbar/e-coupler. Not too painful. That firebox shrouding was made up of the original J3 Wms one, plus heightening for the J1's running-board hump. Lots of soldering with brass and copper sheet. Saw a photo later with a very abbreviated version of the sheathing - I could have saved myself some work.
