Just my opinion: for a 42" by 42" board, 1/4 inch lauan plywood is fine, and the surface will look decent. Framing will be important, I would use 1 by 4 pieces with a brace in the center. As mentioned earlier, glue and screw everything, with the possible exception of the legs.
