Don't cut out the fake coal load. Get some "real coal" of your choice and apply it to the fake coal load with white glue. Do it it in small sections. You'll have bare areas you'll have to touch up. The glue dries clear, so you won't see it. I have done this with 5-6 engines with good results. Looks good to me!
