The Story Behind the 1997 Lionel Vision Camera

Awhile back, I was watching the long gone History Channel series Trains Unlimited, including the episode on toy trains.

In the later part of the episode, they discussed in the Summer of 1997 that Lionel was showing a prototype for a concept called Lionel Vision where a miniature camera and microphones in the Dash 8 locomotive running long hood forwards could stream the footage on the Internet.

I knew about Railscope that Lionel made in 1988, but this idea seemed to escape my knowledge.

I can’t find any documents online about this concept, but I can only assume that much like the proposed Odyssey motors of 1998, this project got scrapped in the end. What a turbulent time for Lionel 1997-8 was…
