Yes, indeed the 5001 class were used for passenger service. As a matter of fact #5008 would regularly pull passenger engines and #5010 out of Colorado mountainous areas where their extra power and traction came in handy

Also, #5004 would also pull passenger engines from New Mexico to Colorado!
