Reply to "TIU software update"

I didn't think I was being ignored, I was just trying to provide a little more info about my old Win 7 PC and also that Windows had previously updated 3rd party drivers for items that I've had over the years, however, my typing doesn't always say what I am really thinking.  So to clarify, my old PC works fine with the DCS loader and my TIU, but I don't remember ever installing any USB drivers on it? That does not mean I haven't though, I could have either forgotten or they could have been loaded by some other device, as that old PC has had a ton of stuff loaded on to it over the years.

The update problem the PC has with updates is with Windows 10. Through the little window at the bottom, MS just keeps telling me I will be notified when it is ready to update. The only thing worse than updating to Win 10 would be missing the free update period and having to pay for it. I can see why they are offering free upgrades, if upgrade is even the proper term here?

Not sure here, and I would have to go back and reread this thread, but I think H1000 may have already tried what you are wanting to try here using VMWARE? I don't have an extra copy of Win 7 either, all 3 of my licenses are currently in use so I don't have one to experiment with and I'm a little short of hardware as well.

On the Win 10 update issue: I'm going to setup one of my machines for a late night scheduled install.

We'll see how it goes.

On the experiment I was suggesting: I think you're right about H1000 trying it using VMWARE. It's just that there are so many variables involved here, I thought a "simple" approach of a plain install from a retail (or OEM) CD might prove interesting. My problem right now is I don't have a retail or OEM CD. I'm probably going to go out tomorrow and get one or I'll download an .iso file to burn one.

I have this (probably unrealistic) feeling that my laptop has been "corrupted" in some way which is what is preventing it from being successful in finding the drivers using the internet search against the MS Update site.

Since my desktop does find the drivers on the MS site, I would rather believe the difference is due to something like corruption rather than Windows version differences.

Just to clear; in your first paragraph where you mention "installing any USB drivers", it isn't USB drivers that are needed by the TIU. It's a driver for the FT232 USB UART device which is a USB serial converter and then that device depends on virtual comm port driver which get installed under the "Ports" entry in the Device Manager Tree.

The only reason I mention it is because if you have never in the past used any device that required one of the USB to serial converters, then when you first plugged in your TIU via the USB cable, it must have loaded the drivers you needed automatically like it's supposed to do.
