Were I to build a new train table, I would purchase sheet goods (like plywood or OSB) and have it ripped into 4 or 6 inch planks and use that for framing.
I have thought about sistering a 4 inch and 6 inch plank and putting the top on the 4 inch part, with the 6 inch part to the outside to make a lip.
