I purchased Grand Central Gems Red Woods and Lodgepole Pines in all larger sizes. I also purchased the scrub brush, twisted wire trees by Grand Central Gems for background purpose.

I made some of the kit trees with glued on foliage on plastic trunks. After a year they were dropping crap all over the place and the plastic trunks looked like there had been a forest fire.

You could also buy a cheap Christmas tree and clip the ends off for small pines for background use. Use the expensive trees in the foreground as feature items.
