trouble repairing american flyer 300 steam engine

I'm retired and trying to learn how to repair and american flyer 300 locomotive. . So far I've replaced the e unit, field assembly, brushes and springs, rewired it and still get nothing but a hum . I could use some advice. sorry about the pictures
