I have the same problem with my track pliers. The nub that pinches the track isn't quite big enough. I've found that I can improve the performance of the pliers by holding it at an angle to get the nub right into the angle where the tube of the track meets the vertical, then flipping the pliers and doing the same thing on the other side.
