Gilbert made many types of trestle sets. Limiting the discussion to just the plastic trestle sets there were 24 piece sets, 26 piece sets and sets of just one size tall trestle. The all one size and the 24 piece sets are 4 1/2", the 26 piece sets are 5". The Frontiersman sets that came with an over/under track assortment use cardboard trestles along with a mountain/tunnel/pass set. My S gauge layout uses 4 1/2" minimum clearance from the railhead. I do not own any Frontiersman engines.
