Used Lionel Legacy SD70-MS with a speaker hum

I just bought a used Lionel Legacy SD70M-2 Locomotive (NS #2658) 6-34612 online that I really like. But after it was unpacked I found out it has an annoying (and loud) hum in the speaker that is present without the unit even ‘running’ as long as the track is powered up. I can adjust the volume with the volume knob, even turn it off completely. Other functions seem to work ok (lights, rail sounds and talk, horn, etc) but I haven’t had it pull a consist yet.

Any ideas? Is it a bad speaker or something upstream? I’m trying to decide if I should fix it or just return it. There were a few minor cosmetic issues but overall I do really like the locomotive and have been searching a while.
