Reply to "ventilation of locomotive sheds?"

At least some locomotive sheds had larges hoods to collect the smoke and steam and vent it to the outside, like so (don't know if this is a universal application, though):



As for train sheds, from what I've read they simply relied on their cathedral-sized proportions to allow the exhaust to dissipate.
