IMO, you can't go wrong with a Lionel Postwar number 2065 steam locomotive and tender. It's cast iron, has smoke, a whistle and Magnetraction, and its very durable, reliable, affordable, and fixable because there are plenty of Postwar parts. I think its a great first locomotive for a 5 year old child. Arnold
