Thanks PH1975, I was able to Google that Lionel Product number owners manual, and I printed it out. Your comment is very helpful, and I think I guessed correctly when I wired the 3 little wires back in place.

The engine now runs great in every way and the red n tacky cured the wheezing.

But, still no headlight.
