I often run ten-wheeler steam engines because they have a classic look and are a good size for a small model railroad such as my 12’-by-8’. The two steamers in these photos are old and new. PRR G-5s 5740 is an MTH Premier model (20-3031-1) with PS1 and a BCR that I have been running for more than twenty years. New York Central F-12 1232 is a recent Lionel Legacy model (2131070). I like the old engine just as much as the new one.
The hobo colony on my layout has a new fellow in front of the trackside outhouse. The outhouse is very light and regularly gets knocked off the table. This week, for the first time, it got damaged, and I had to repair the roof and the doorway. So, I attached the new guy to the outhouse with epoxy to add some weight that may prevent future falls. As a youngster, I often saw pictures of hobos on railroads taken during the Great Depression, and since my trains and model railroads are set in that era, there are quite a few hobos to be seen.
