Christopher, for a backdrop fastened to the side of the layout I use 1/2 plywood, about 1-1/2' high bolted to the 1x2 fascia below the table top. I mounted some foam to the plywood, in case operator over zealousness resulted in a high speed derailment into the backdrop, then my wife painted sky and scenery on the foam.
