HandyAndy - I'd keep the finish as is - just think of the fun you can have with that beast.  

 Hide it in one of the layout tunnels before visitors come over.  Start running other trains and then switch it on. As it emerges from the tunnel say any of the following:

 1."OMG! the drain from the dishwasher is leaking again!

 2. "Can you believe it? I ordered that train two years ago and the package just arrived yesterday - it was full of seaweed and was still damp inside."

 3. "I bought that sight unseen - the ad said there was a small amount of rust that I could easily remove."

 4. "I was the youngest member of our family and my siblings were always hiding my trains.  It took me two years but I finally found it buried in my Mom's flower garden."
