My recollection is that the SER-2 is only necessary if you are going to be using the MTH Wifi (WIU and app) as part of your system. If you just want to be able to add and control Legacy engines with limited capability using the DCS remote, you just need the correct cable to connect the serial port of TIU to the serial port of the Legacy base (and the Legacy "one-wire" connected to a TIU output as you've described).
