Obviously, heavier cars will put more drag on an engine. The discussion on the switcher thread also mentioned adjusting the couplers on the loco's as opposed to adding weight. I don't have this issue with all of my cars so I figured I would try the weights first. I run short trains so I'm not too concerned about the extra weight.
