LC will run on 9.6V DC, but the smoke and for LC+, the couplers will not function. I did a Camelback and started with a 9.6V battery pack. The result was it ran OK, but it didn't have a great top-end speed. That was not a problem, but the lack of smoke and electrocouplers was, so I put two battery packs in.
