If you wait until you think you've learned everything, you'll never get started.

Start with a simple frame using 1x4's, add some legs (2x2's are fine), add a few angled braces(1x2's) underneath to add stability, throw some plywood on top (5/8 or 3/4"), lay some track down in a simple oval, hook up the two wires and start running trains. After about 30 minutes, now that we got that out of our system, we'll probably add two switches and a bit more track, after about 30 minutes of that you'll probably want to……..

Well, you get the idea. Get started simple, and it's easy to make changes if you're using sectional track. Besides, you'll be running trains from the get go, and soon you'll say, "hey, how about I add a …...…..here"
