Just some information from Microchip Regarding the 16F648 PIC, the newer device available is the 16F18444. Know that the PIC16F648 is coded as an MPASM and the PIC16F18444 is coded as an MPIDE X. That means it is not a drop in part. The ASM has to be migrated over the IDE X. This can be a daunting task. It also requires a PICkit 4 for programming.
So let's see what the Big L solution turns out to be.
