For the record, all electronic based systems function on DC. Conversion from AC to DC satisfies the two basic requirements, DC for the electronics and DC for the can motors. AC was the initial approach because transformers were simple and rectifier components were not readily available. It was quite fortunate that the early universal motors worked so well on AC.
