I was never able to get the wheels off, however I decided that I could rough up the knurling on the axle shaft by sliding the lose helical gear to the side. I then took a punch and disturbed the knurling under the gear with a few good blows. The axle showed no signs of bending, and it took a fair bit of strength to make the small dents. I was added a few drops of ca gel and pressed the gear back into center. After that dried, I used a flathead jewelers screwdriver to apply some jb weld where the gear meets the axle and let it dry overnight. I ran it for about 10 min this morning at a good speed and it's working well.
Well done. As an aside, another and possibly better fixative for the loose helical is Loctite.
