The MTH wireless tether has electrical conductors in the draw bar. There isn't a separate cable but there is still a physical electrical connection between the engine and tender.
The Lionel system has an infrared connection between the engine and tender. The box for IR unit used to be rather large but has been reduced in size recently. The biggest down side is that when running, especially through switches or curves, the data link will be lost and the sound will drop out for a moment.
