It gets harder when you belong to a train club with nearly 100 members and the possibility of over 1000 locomotives. A lot of overlap of numbers. We had to reprogram the Legacy controller with specific numbers assigned to certain "classes " of locomotives. Ie. TMCC diesels, TMCC steam, Legacy diesels, Legacy steam, TMCC accessories, Legacy accessories, etc. Each class has a specific block of numbers that members program their engines to irregardless of the road number. For example my TMCC 611 J has a road number of 611 but I had to program it to 18 because 1 through 17 are reserved for TMCC diesels.

For clubs I definitely. An see the need for four digit locomotive IDs. Perhaps we can wish it will show up in a future Lionel catalog
