Lots of good advice in the last few posts.  Just a couple of things to add regarding payment options.  I second the idea of having a mixture of bills - not only does having the exact amount speed up the transaction, but I think it's bad form to bargain a price down from $95 to $80 and then hand the guy a hundred dollar bill.  Also, many sellers will take a personal check; I've had lots of folks say they've never gotten a bad check from a TCA member (I'm sure there are a few exceptions).  When buying from dealers, the sales tax situation can vary.  I've found that most dealers will discount the item to cover the tax when paying with cash.  Some do the same for checks.  When buying from a dealer, I always ask if there is a discount for cash; if they say no, I whip out the plastic.
