What exactly is the part number of this diode? I'd expect that any diode across these plates would be a TVS, that would be a part with no stripe! A proper part would be this 1500W 33.3V TVS at Digikey. If that's a normal silicon diode, I'd expect the transformer to act VERY oddly!
