The whistle/bell buttons will trigger auto-mode in subways just like the z1000, am I right? Yes: Bell+Whistle+Whistle= Auto Mode

Does the wave signal bother Lionchief engines at all? No, it is a simulated sine wave that should (generally) work with everything.
I assume I don't put the z4000 throttle to full when running a Lionchief engine? Right, 18V max for modern Lionel electronics.

Postwar: Same problems running postwar trains with mechanical whistles as with the modern Lionel transformer? I have had a Z4000 since 1998, never had any problem with mechanical whistle/horn relay activation. However, there is no 5V compensating winding.
I assume they don't work with the whistle trigger and I'll have to switch to a postwar transformer if I want the whistling tender to work correctly? They work fine, but again no compensating winding.

Note that the "Conventional Classics" whistle and horn boards do not work correctly with the Z4000.
